Statewide 2-1-1 a reality in Washington
Callers' questions cover problem needs such as domestic violence, child care, legal assistance, and other social and health service categories. Most questions are regarding basic needs for food, emergency shelter, utility assistance and medical information. 2-1-1 I&R specialists refer callers to the appropriate state agencies (especially DSHS) and nonprofit organizations, listed in the database. Most of the 2-1-1 information can also be found online at www.win211.org.
DSHS is a partner with the Washington Information Network 2-1-1 in providing DSHS information for the database. The 2-1-1 Community Resources Database contains over 8,200 health and human service providers, representing 11,300 sites and more than 19,800 local services available throughout Washington.
From September to December, holiday related questions are most frequent. During tax season, 2-1-1 is the designated number for information regarding the locations of free tax preparation services, which offer assistance in applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit. 2-1-1 also assists in the aftermath of weather and other emergencies to disseminate public information.
With the help of I&R specialists, non-English speaking callers can access translation services for 155 languages. Several call centers have bilingual I&R specialists on staff as well. TTY numbers are also available. All 2-1-1 calls are free and confidential.
