Planned Giving
Contributed by Fred Matthews, an independent planned giving professional
Last year about this time, I was writing an article similar to this one about the importance of periodically reviewing one’s will to be sure it is up-to-date. As a result, I decided to take my own advice—even though I knew mine was current. After all, it was only a few years ago that it was updated.
Guess what? In that short period of time, things had changed in my life and there were three—yes, three—things that needed to be updated to reflect those changes. It’s easy to just put your will in a drawer or safe deposit box and not think about it.
As part of your planning for the year ahead, I encourage you to take out your will and make sure it is reflects your wishes and desires in the event something happens to you. Make sure your durable power of attorney and health care directive are current too.
When you review your will, it’s also a good time to reflect on the legacy you want to leave. If you think Hopelink is an important organization in our community, and you want to make sure our work continues, you may want to include a bequest in your will. We have some suggested wording for a bequest to Hopelink you may wish to have when you meet with your attorney.
